EcoMuvi at Berlinale 2024

Events /

The 74th Berlinale is just around the corner: an event that promises not only an abundance of high-quality cinema, but also discussions and initiatives that highlight the importance of building a more sustainable future for both the film industry and the planet.

Only a few days remain until the 74th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival, and excitement is growing as the city prepares to welcome filmmakers, artists, and cinema lovers from around the world. The Berlinale—with its unique mix of artistic exploration and entertainment—stands as one of the most important film platforms globally, where innovation, creativity, and social engagement come together. This year, EcoMuvi is proud to take part in this extraordinary event, not only with a certified film in the Official Competition, but also with a range of initiatives dedicated to sustainability in the film industry.

EcoMuvi at the Berlinale: Training and Sustainability

Within the framework of the European Film Market (EFM), EcoMuvi will co-organize two training sessions aimed at making film productions greener. These workshops represent a unique opportunity for anyone interested in integrating sustainable practices into their production activities.

  • Saturday, February 17: the ENTRY LEVEL session, designed for newcomers who wish to learn how to start producing in a more environmentally responsible way.

  • Sunday, February 18: the ADVANCED LEVEL session, intended for professionals with prior experience who want to deepen their knowledge of the criteria and reporting standards needed to implement advanced sustainability strategies.

These sessions provide valuable opportunities for exchange and learning, helping to shape a new generation of filmmakers who are more aware and responsible toward the environment.

The Official Competition Film: Gloria!

One of EcoMuvi’s most significant presences at the Berlinale is Gloria!, an EcoMuvi-certified film selected for the Official Competition. Set in the 1800s, the film takes place at the Sant’Ignazio College, an old music institute for girls located near Venice. The story’s protagonist is Teresa—known to everyone as “la Mutola”—a silent maid, invisible to those around her. No one knows her real name nor her extraordinary gift for perceiving the harmony of the universe and transforming reality through music.

The turning point comes when Teresa discovers, in a forgotten corner of the college, a revolutionary musical instrument for the time: the piano. Around her—and the magical sound of this new instrument—a quartet of young musicians, the best students of Sant’Ignazio, comes together. Gloria! not only tells Teresa’s story but also pays tribute to all those female composers and musicians whose lives and talents, like pressed flowers, have been hidden within the folds of history.

With its touching narrative and strong focus on musical aesthetics, Gloria! is a debut film that celebrates not only the art of music but also the imagination and creativity that have so often been overlooked in women’s history.

Sustainability and the Berlinale: A Shared Mission

Beyond the training sessions and its presence in the Official Competition, EcoMuvi will participate in several events centered on sustainability—an increasingly vital topic in the world of cinema. In particular, we are thrilled to take part in the Eisvogel Awards, where we were among the nominees last year. This initiative honors those who stand out for adopting innovative ecological practices in film production.
