FR*CINEMA: queer culture, accessibility and sustainability along a shared pathway

FR*CINEMA is the Rome-based festival dedicated to queer cinema, combining cultural programming, training and production support. Created by APS Arcigay Roma Gruppo ORA, in collaboration with Fondazione Piccolo America at Cinema Troisi and curated by Pietro Turano, the festival works to give greater visibility to films that often receive limited distribution and to create concrete opportunities for a new generation of filmmakers.

The third edition began in spring with screenings and talks and will continue in autumn with workshops, leading up to the final awards ceremony. EcoMuvi supports the entire programme through the 2026 EcoMuvi Standard for Film and Audiovisual Promotional Events. Following several stages throughout the year makes it possible to assess not just a single evening, but the project’s overall operation.

Here, sustainability is closely connected to the festival’s core mission. FR*CINEMA places physical accessibility, subtitles, Italian Sign Language interpretation and inclusive measures for people who face greater barriers to accessing culture at the heart of its work. At the same time, its free-to-enter competition for filmmakers under 35 supports the development of fiction and documentary short films through production awards, mentoring, professional services and screening opportunities.

EcoMuvi’s support also becomes part of the creative pipeline. Services offered to the winning projects include guidance from an EcoMuvi Manager and a certification pathway. This ensures that sustainability is not only a theme explored by the festival, but also a practical skill applied to the films it helps bring to life.

The work will therefore continue in stages: collecting evidence during the spring activities, providing support and monitoring during the autumn workshops, and conducting the final assessment at the awards ceremony. It is a pathway developed over time, reflecting the principle that inclusion, accessibility and environmental responsibility must be integrated into the organization from the outset, rather than added at the end.
