It is a cold January night when two young thieves on the run – a girl and a boy, Beatrice Navi and Guido Cenere – land on an island, are caught by the caretaker, Giovanni Marengadi, and by the Doberman, Pangloss, and are taken before the owners of the sumptuous villa at the centre of the island, known as ‘delle Ginestre’.
The villa is home to the eccentric Reffi family. Antonio, the head of the family, is a former conductor who views life with a touch of irony, particularly the lives of his two restless children: Carla, a successful writer, awaiting a reply from her publisher regarding her new novel—a reply that is slow in coming; and Celestino, a former doctor with a passion for philosophy and mathematics, haunted by his past and obsessed with a violinist of whom he retains only distant memories captured on Super 8 film. Also in the villa are an enigmatic housekeeper, Jole, and her husband Vittorio, Carla’s secretary.
Celestino Reffi proposes a deal to the two young people on the run from who knows exactly what: he will not report them and will hide them from Inspector Carrua, who is on their trail, but they must undertake a sort of ‘educational programme’. Celestino “is certain he can change their lives.”
But it is the arrival of the two young people that will change everyone’s lives forever, in that villa suspended between water and mist.
