In the midst of the Second World War, a group of young girls live in a boarding school run by the nuns of the Opera Pia. On Christmas Eve, the girls rehearse for the live nativity scene they are to perform that evening during Midnight Mass. After Sister Fioralba, the Mother Superior, leaves the girls alone to listen to the war bulletin, little Serafina inadvertently changes the radio station and, as the music plays, the girls begin to sing and dance, much to the nun’s annoyance. Fioralba washes the girls’ mouths out with soap for singing frivolous verses, but Serafina refuses the punishment, insisting she hadn’t been singing.
